Should You Bring Your Smartphone To The Spa?

How would you feel about bringing a smartphone to a spa? Have you ever done it? Has anyone bothered you while they were scrolling down their Instagram feed and snapping selfies, as you were trying to relax and enjoy your warm and bubbly soak in the hot tub?

Lots of people choose to go to spas to genuinely connect with their senses and flush the toxins out of their brains, dropping all their worries at the door and wanting to completely disconnect from the outer world. Having someone put on a full-fledged photo shoot just a few inches from you while you are trying to stay as mindful as you can would be enough to pull most people out of their meditative states.

Would it be a good idea? Let's dig a little deeper.spa

Why Phones Are Not A Good Idea At The Spa

As useful, convenient, and highly entertaining they might be, smartphones will also grab all your attention and hold on to it for hours in a row, especially if you like to endlessly scroll down your Instagram or TikTok feeds where new content is posted every second. The fact that these fun-packed apps can create an addiction is undeniable, and chances are bringing a phone to the spa will grab and completely hold your attention for the remainder of your stay, preventing you from actually enjoying the activities you went there for in the first place.

Plus, taking a smartphone to a spa is also prone to grab the unwanted attention of the rest of the people who are there trying to enjoy the services, just like you. To many people, a spa is a sanctuary of peace and serenity and a cool escape from daily stresses. Accordingly, they may have a more difficult time getting rid of all the thoughts and concerns that are troubling them if your phone is constantly buzzing and vibrating next to them, or if they can see and hear you react to funny spa TikToks or the game action unfolding on your tiny screen.

In other words, some people might find smartphones in a spa disrespectful and will choose to leave them behind in their lockers.

Now that we have learned why phones might be a bad idea for both you and the people around you at the spa, let's see what are a few of the arguments that could lobby for bringing a smart device to the ultimate relaxation sanctuary.

Why Would Phones Be A Good Idea At The Spa?

If you are going there alone, you might be interested in seeing something more exciting than someone snoring on the lounger next to you. If you didn't know this, there are several spa relaxation rooms that host rich libraries of books. However, if your choice is limited to just a couple of fashion magazines, you might feel the need to look for some extra company elsewhere, and eventually end up grabbing your phone. There is nothing wrong with that, as long as you will follow a few common-sense rules:

  • Use a good pair of earphones to listen to your own soothing music, watch a new episode of your favourite show, or play an audiobook, so no one around you feels bothered by your activities to the slightest.

  • Use your phone to snap some boomerangs and pictures of the gorgeous spa as soon as you arrive there so you can successfully capture the cool vibe, but try not to abuse your phone with dozens of facial selfies afterward.

  • Make sure to show full respect for the rest of the people at the spa and never post any pictures showing their faces without their consent.

  • Never bring a phone to a dark/silent room at the spa.

  • Put your phone back in the locker once you are done using it to prevent someone from accidentally grabbing it along with your robe. All robes look the same at a spa, so this happens more often than you would think.

Remember that some spas will kindly remind you to turn off your phone so you can fully enjoy your soothing experience, so make sure you familairise yourself with all the rules and allow yourself to fully detach from the stress for an hour or two.
